Let's talk about Thai classical music.

This is me and my Jakay (jà-kây),
a three-stringed musical.

The two pictures above took when I was a 4th year student of the faculty of fine and applied arts - Khon Kaen University.

Jakay is my favorite Thai pick instrument. If you want to play this instrument you have to bind its pick ( the pick looks like a pencil) with your index finger of your right hand and use your left hand to make melodies.

And this is my friend and a Saw Sam Sai,
(sor săam săai) a three-stringed fiddle.

If you take a look at each picture carefully you will see each instrument is decorated with a garland elegantly.

A garland is very popular using in Thai traditional ceremony. It's also popular to use to decorate Thai classical instrument. Not only makes beauty, a garland is so sweet smell too. In Thailand, most of garlands made of jasmines, white Champakas, roses and etc.

Next time I will show you some of my photographs that I took by myself. It's just like a nostalgia fashion from a magazine! Well, I and my friends had thought about being as a fashion model, and we wanted to take some photographs with our favorite Thai classical instruments, and wanted to make it just like a fashion show in the magazine.

So... the result is just WONDERFUL!!

I used to be a muralist.

In 2004 I needed to have some project for my thesis for the next term. Finally I found what I wanted to do. I wanted to study using new medium and new materials for the traditional Thai mural painting style. Therefore, my project thesis was "the study of using new medium and materials in traditonal Thai mural painting"
Above is me and my friend "TriKlao"
Above is Naoko, my foreigner friend. She is Japanese.
Now, you may notice the mural painting behide these people. YES! It's my solo artwork. The mural in Thai painting style from new medium and materials(mainly is using Acrylic instead of colored powder and the gouache method and use gold carbon powder instead of 100% gold leaf.) It started May 13rd 2004 and finished 11 November 2004. This Thai mural painting was created in the Thai traditonal music and dancing club in Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen.

The picture above is Dancing Shiva.

It comes from the Dancing Shiva on eastern pediment of antechamber of Prasat Phnom Rung (one of the most significant ancient monuments of Thailand.)

I created the Dancing Shiva by using the same action from the Dancing Shiva on eastern pediment of antechamber of Prasat Phnom Rung but I dressed him up to Thai traditional design.

from the begin.

Until the finish.

The picture above is the left side of the mural. The story of this picture comes from the legend of Sathukarn song. When the angels hear the charming sound of the Sathukarn song, they appear themselves and begin to dance so gracefully. The picture above is the right side of the mural. The story of this picture comes from the legend of Sathukarn song also (Sathukarn song is very old Thai song which assume more than 500 years ago) . In the picture you would see 5 gods of music are playing Thai classical instruments, in Thai called Pan Ja Duriyang (5 pieces band). Now, people often can hear this classic sound from our Thai traditional music and dancing club in the university, but we are not play for 5 pieces as the mural, we play 4 pieces (see the picture below.)

Melody Underneath The Golden Tree

Title : Melody Underneath The Golden Tree
Size : 35.5 x 48.5 inches
Technique : Acrylic & Plaster & Gold Leaf on Canvasboard
Style : Traditional Thai Design
Date of Creation : 2005
'Melody Underneath The Golden Tree' is the my thesis artwork number 4 after 'The voice of God' which is my thesis artwork number 3
For this artwork, I was study about using the texture to increase the picture's interesrting and I wanted to know that how it looked like if combined the texture with traditional Thai painting style.
I designed using the texture to be the golden tree, the cloud in the sky and the hilliness. I have used many of goldleafs for this picture especially with the golden tree, I wanted it to be the main attractive object for this picture.

The sketch above is one of my objects in the painting. About the method of my painting, at first I would sketch any objects to be the good structure follow the traditional Thai design. Then I would put the detail in any objects to make it finish and ready to paint.

Above : The god was playing a Krabpuang.

Below : The god was playing a Krajabi.

Below : The angel was playing a Saw Sam Sai.

The story in this painting is about the god's performance Thai music charmingly. My inspiration to create this painting came from my favorite activity I usually do when I'm in my free time. It is playing Thai classical music.
In this picture above you would see 4 musical instruments. They are Thai classical instuments which the name from your left to right is Krajabi (look like a guitar), Krabpuang (the smallest in the picture), Saw Sam Sai (Thai fiddle) and Tub or Ton (Thai drum). Krajabi and Saw Sam Sai are for making the melody. Krabpuang and Ton are the percussions.

The picture above are Saw Sam Sai and Krajabi.

This is my method to copy the sketch to the canvas.

For this article, I hope you enjoy and get some idea about the traditional Thai painting. Next article I will show you more about my artworks since I was a student in the faculty of fine and applied art, KKU.

Thank you for your attention.
Bye for now.
